FRIDAY 25 JANUARY

oh big woe just over 24 hours ago this computer finally went blurp and had to be taken all the way back to how it was when it was brand new. Everything is lost. I don't miss any of it. Except Abortive Downtempo 10 - that's had it - completely vanished from the universe - it was the one I couldn't upload to Bandcamp a few days ago.

It was good too. In fact it was brilliant. It was bloody fantastic - the greatest thing ever - let the myths begin. I'm a total luddite but what has surprised me is how nostalgic I am feeling for the way the computer was. I don't miss any of the data etc but over the years everything gets slowly tweaked to the way you like it and now suddenly files and everything are just wrongly organised and you go back to grab your old familiar free software and it's all been "improved" - ie made worse.

It doesn't do the simple things you want it to do. Instead it now does lots of fancy new complicated things you have no use for. It'll all soon get back to feeling familiar. And what is brilliant is how clean the desktop is and how simple the computer has become again and sooo much faster - dear god there were so many useless unused programs and gunk all over the place. It has been a good experience and made me vow to keep things simple. A wonderful hyperminimal purge.

The only great thing about not being 21 any more is that you realise it's not worth storing up stuff for the future - if you don't listen to today's stuff today and watch today's youtube today then you will never experience them. I don't like this piece much at all. It was done just to get back on the horse right away. Start the process of getting the new software to feel like an old friend again. The cover photo is of our flat roof while we were putting a new coat of waterproof stuff on it - that roof is used as a landmark by pilots as they come in to land at Bournemouth airport.

It's crazy but in thirty years time there will be people smiling fondly as they look back on their days struggling with WindowsVista. I can still remember the excitement soon after getting the computer of the first time downloading something from pirate bay - I remember needing to get out the house for a while and my beloved dropping me off about twelve miles from home and me walking back and as I came into the living room 99.9% changed to one hundred and the line went green and ludicrously it might be one of my happiest memories.
