THURSDAY 31 JANUARY

Boy this piece is dull. And I should've killed it. But I think it might serve a purpose. It's one of those pieces that makes you want to explode. Repetition is brilliant when it is a brilliant thing that is doing the repeating. But when it is a dull thing then it can make you angry. And as my friend Johnny R once said - anger is an energy.

Dull people will merely turn off dull music. But the scintillating people will use those feelings of anger to go out and do better. All my life I have battled with and against addictions to liquids and powders and pills - I've always known that my life would be better if I could get clean - but being a minimalist and lover of the beautiful repetition I have always wanted to grab that early-binge high and stretch it out all day and all week and all year.

And when I hear a long proggy album - as most of them are nowadays - and I catch a few simple moments when the music briefly focuses I want to save that little piece of music - take it out of its horrid complex confused noisy proggy environment and put it somewhere safe and then give it room to go on and on and on and become the whole double-album all by itself.

Yesterday afternoon I went to the funeral of a friend who'd drunk almost as much as myself and was less lucky - she was a bit of a hippy and her "coffin" was made of loose wickerwork and you could see the outline of part of her body inside it - and I kept beaming thoughts at her - "Sam you're missing this - you're missing this - you're missing this" - and what was she missing? - she was missing the boredom of being sober - which is what I was and am - both bored and sober.

This piece is my musical idea of sobriety. It is a piece for recovering alcoholics. It is trying to save them - to get them to turn back and hit the booze again all the way to the end. People think that addiction and hyperminimalism are easy - that you just grab the easy part of the day or make a tiny little piece of music and stretch them out till death. But ithey're not easy - the talent is all in knowing the right few notes and the right mood to be in when you start to go under and this piece is completely shit so I won't be going under tonight. The photograph is of a nearby house.
