SUNDAY 10 MARCH

SBJ needs a break - this is all just relentlessly revealing myself to be a one-trick pony and I need to take time to learn another position. It's okay enough and'd sound great if it'd come out in 1968 or something. I am far too young to know what 1968 was like but if it was 1968 I'd be sitting here still trying to obey the rules about What Is Music.

There'd be a bit inside me that'd know that I'd want the good bits to just go on and on and on and for there to be no boring bits - but I'd've been brainwashed into thinking that that wasn't music - that it was "cheating" or something. Someone else would've done it and it'd've sounded fantastic and everyone would go Why didn't I think of it first? - but everyone had thought of it first - but had been too chicken to do it. I don't know what the equivalent today is of that conformity that we all want to break out of.

We all think we can do absolutely anything. But no one's done anything for ages. It's in the back of all our minds - and when someone actually makes the breakthrough we'll all realise that it was something we'd been thinking about without knowing it. These two bits are the least experimental things ever. They're both hyperminimal and insultingly simple and lazy.Until I learn how to do something a bit less stupid it's time to shut up.
