SATURDAY 23 FEBRUARY

introduction
by
SONJA BERLIN-JONES
(professional musician)

Oooh did you see that - my new subtitle - "professional musician" !!! - yes it has happened AT LAST !!!!! - after about one hundred albums on Bandcamp someone has actually PAID to download one of my masterpieces. It's a pity my fame is happening at a time when I'm making the worst music I've ever made. But never mind. I AM NOW A BONA FIDE PROFESSIONAL MUSICIAN !!!!!!!!!

Oh if only my poor broken-hearted disappointed mother was still alive to see it. Thank you ManMaas !!!! I love you !!!! I'll pay you back later. You don't know what this has done for my ego. I've always treated life like a big joke and I suppose it's like a computer game - there are lots of levels - and I've just moved up to the next musician's level.

There is still a long way to go. I've got to the level where other musicians - total strangers - get in touch out of the blue and offer to collaborate - but when I say Great they immediately disappear. I haven't got to the level of anyone thinking I'd be worth putting on live - no bill is long enough to have me comfortably at the bottom of it.

And of course I labour under the disadvantage of living in Britain - where genius is never recognised - hang on I'm getting a bit deluded - but you know what I mean. All my favourite genius UK musicians from when I was a child were always more popular in USA and mainland Europe than in the UK - early Ultravox and early Simple Minds and Wire and Bill Nelson and Peter Hammill and in the meantime I'd be surrounded by thick twats who thought "real music" was Echo & The Bloody Bunnymen.

To state the bleedin obvious - the internet has made being-a-musician so much easier and so much harder. Anyone can download e.g. LMMS and in ten minutes have something banging away and then set up a Bandcamp account and upload it and within an hour they'll be as much a proper musician as that Sufjam Stevans bloke or whatever he's called.

Except no one will ever discover you. I used to think that just by being on Bandcamp people would find me and justice would prevail. But when this computer went doolally a few week ago and I had to do everything from Lyndhurst library - even I couldn't find me, having forgotten my password. But later I discovered that only about six people on the whole planet are actually hunting around on Bandcamp and the net labels. It's always been like that.

And yet the shoutboxes are full of people who say they were into all the great old krautrock/swamp/minimal/etc stuff the moment it was happening. They're liars. The total number of people who really are ever searching for the great new stuff and who'd know it if they heard it amounts to about seven people. You, me, ManMaas and about 4 others. I don't know where this is going so I'll stop.
