WEDNESDAY 2 JANUARY 2013

Oh lordamercy here is my first album of 2013 and it is almost exactly the same as the last one of 2012 - it was soooo beautiful. It is one of the strange quirks of music that if you are a proper musician and you make one album every three years then people expect your albums to always be very similar.

But if you're a hack and you churn out five albums a week then people tell you you're getting boring if two consecutive albums bear any similarity whatsoever. It's like writing. A newspaper columnist has to change her opinion every week or else she's accused of going stale. But a novelIst can write the same novel every year for a whole lifetime and win the Nobel Price for Literature.

Another thing - people will say this album is too minimal - too repetitive - like that's a CRIME ? But like all my "repetitive" albums, there is no section that is identical to any other section. I say this every time. It is the only repetitive thing I ever do. As with the previous album, this one took about eight minutes to make.

God knows I was so tempted to make it more complex - I was going to add rainfall - but after last year's weather I think I'd lose all my British fans. It's so difficult to create the impression of heat and good weather. Maybe that is why the playground sounds of children is such a staple of ambient music - it's the best way of telling people that it's not raining.

Some of my more loyal fans might be wondering why I'm not doing free ltd edition CDRs any more - though maybe they're relieved to think they're off my mailing list at long last. No such luck. It's just temporary. The house is in upheaval and there just isn't the room to flaff about with typewriters and lumps of cardboard and huge piles of books to keep things pressed together till the glue sets.

But it is really the only way to get the immortality we all crave - physical objects. Downloads don't cut it. Even if you charge and try to make people "value" their downloads - it can never work. Nothing works - except the non-distractionlessness of the outsider. Being unemployable and unknown and free to churn out stuff without it being instantly overanalysed by the thick joyless opinionators of the internet - these are freedoms that Thom Yorke and Jack White yearn for but can never regain.
