THURSDAY 13 DECEMBER 2012

Here is a field recording I made this morning as I walked to Lyndhurst to pick up our car at the local garage, where it had been repaired yesterday. The recording starts with me closing our back door and walking across the back garden and out the back gate and then our geese spot me and start shrieking and then I walk through another gate and cross a fence and walk through some icy puddles and across a field and you can hear a nearby house being demolished and then for the remainder of the recording I walk along quiet lanes that are tarmac'd or gravel or just mud and towards the end of the recording I am walking through the muddy pathless woods.

The morning was sunny, there had been a hard frost. I kept as quiet as possible. The occasional cough and the large number of sniffs aren't some deliberate sad way of trying to make the recording less boring. All were necessary. Only one car passed me. No pedestrians or cyclists. I stopped the recording at just before the 28-minute point - when I was about three-quarters of the way to Lyndhurst.

I can't imagine anyone will want to hear this. Field recordings are always so boring. But they do serve a very useful function. They make the person doing the recording listen so much more intently. As I walked along holding the recorder - a camera - I noticed lots of sounds I would have normally missed. I noticed how quiet it was. I was surprised at how little birdsong there was around me. I noticed how there is a sudden point when the traffic from the main Lyndhurst-Cadam road becomes quite loud-ish. I noticed lots of things. So I am very pleased with it. It is a brilliant thing to do - but not a brilliant thing to listen to.
